People often ask me, how does one become an expert in their field and remain at the top? Standards and technology change with a blink of an eye, so is it actually possible to become and remain at the top of your game at all times?

I say YES!……….and here are 7 ways to do it:

Always Have A Plan – Go into every situation with a strategy, just like when you go food shopping you have a list, rather then aimlessly wondering around

Be A Leader – Show your pioneer spirit, and make your own path rather than following the paved road

Observe & Listen – Keep an open ear and do more listening than talking

Build Your Network – Invest time in making connections and meeting other experts

Always Move Forward – Follow procedures and create a system so that you are always creating good

Prioritize – Choose tasks that are actionable and achievable, don’t waste time

Always Be Open To Learning – Keep an open mind, engage in classes and learning to expand your knowledge base

Don’t get me wrong you need to start with an education and surrounding yourself in an empowering environment. But sticking to a solid routine and following these steps are a GREAT way to propel yourself to “expert” status.

Stay Tuned!

In today’s world, I think it’s fair to say that we’re ALL a little overwhelmed. With so many options and different commitments it’s really hard to just keep things simple.

We end up with email cluttering our inboxes, junk cluttering our houses, dishes cluttering our sinks. Too much to read. Too many commitments. Friends want our time, family wants our time, work wants our time. After a while, everywhere you turn, there’s more to do!

Are you feeling overwhelmed yet?

Because I know this is true for most people, I want to share what I think might be the MOST important life strategy there is:

Simplification!

Take time to regularly simplify your life. I promise you… EVERYTHING IS NOT IMPORTANT.

One of the best things I’ve ever done is to decide what is MOST IMPORTANT in my life, and then make a hard line and just stick to those things (as best I can).

In the interest of keeping this SIMPLE, I’ll end it after I ask one question:

What can you do right now to simplify your life?

I’m going to make the assumption that we have a lot in common. After all, I’m guessing that you have struggled – or still do struggle – with procrastination and staying motivated. And that’s something I too have battled in my life.

In my work helping people (including myself) overcome procrastination, I’ve heard and used all the excuses. I know the “text book” excuses for not doing work backward and forward.

Procrastinators are great at excuses. I mean, just check these ones out:

“I don’t have the proper equipment”

“I’ve been working hard and deserve a break”

“This might not be good enough anyway”

“Give it time and I’ll do a good job later”

“I need inspiration to come!”

“I’ve got other things to do though”

“I’ll do it Monday since the week’s over”

“Will this stuff matter 200 years from now?”

You get the message. And you’ve probably found yourself dishing those excuses out yourself in your own procrastination experiences.

As hard as it may appear for you to break the cycle of procrastination, as you know, hope is at hand – along with some great help.

Right now I’m giving away a really useful worksheet I teach my clients to use to help them have a “Clear and Productive Day.” If you’re interested in this free worksheet, just download it here (right click and hit “save as”).

It’s pretty self explanatory, but if you want any help with it just shoot an email to me at rob@calmcoolproductive.com.

Be well.

Today I want to explain the hard part of simplifying, and why most of us are so BAD at it.

Simplifying, at it’s core, is about saying NO.

We need to start saying no to over committing, saying no to new ideas, saying no to friends and family requests, saying no to that new gadget that we know we won’t use.

We say no so that we can REALLY do what we say yes to.

How different would your life be if you really did all the things you promised yourself and others you would do?

This can be really hard when we’re overly worried about what others think of us. ”What will happen to Jenny if I don’t do this report?” ”What will Tom think if I say no to golf this week?”

This kind of thinking can keep us trapped.

We need to realize that simplification is about cutting things out. But we’re not cutting things out to have or do less, but rather to bring quality and attention to WHAT REALLY MATTERS in our life.

As soon as this makes sense, it becomes easier to start saying no to the things that aren’t as important. When we can say no to the unimportant, life becomes much more manageable, and much more simple.

What are you doing in your life that isn’t aligned with your highest vision for yourself? Go ahead and stop doing that right now, you have my permission.

By now, you know whether or not you procrastinate and you know just how much damage it can do in your life.

But why on earth do you do it? Why do you do something repeatedly, if it just damages you and causes you so much pain? To overcome procrastination, it’s a good idea to determine why we procrastinate. The simple answer is:

We THINK it is helping us.

We procrastinate to deal with the complexities of life. And procrastinating gives us something. It helps us avoid things we believe are uncomfortable, things we’re usually scared to deal with on some level.

But as we’re starting to see, it may be easier to just face what we’re running from.

Once we have these incorrect beliefs about what makes us comfortable, we develop habits of procrastinating. Habits are the biggest area we need to develop if we want to change our behavior over time. I call this habit management, and it’s one of the biggest things I teach my clients.

I have nailed it down to 3 main areas, or habits, we have that keep us procrastinating, and here they are:

We don’t regularly plan: If we don’t plan our days we just become reactive to whatever happens to us, we find that things just spiral out of control as the week progresses. Then come Friday we discover that nothing has really gotten done.

We don’t use time appropriately: Wow, all of us are guilty of this at some stage. Often when we don’t have deadlines, we just let things slide and slide until, “Oh damn, the important tasks weren’t done!” Time easily slips away from us if we don’t use it appropriately!

And most importantly… We don’t prioritize what matters the most: If we don’t know what’s important to us, we become available to be pulled in any direction the world wants to pull us in. We just don’t feel motivated at all when we don’t determine what matters the most in our lives and in our days.

So… How do we stop ourselves from procrastinating and keep ourselves motivated?

It’s obvious that we need to plan our days, make effective use of our time by imposing deadlines, and by deciding what matters the most to us.

The first step is to decide what really matters. We need to look at the things that we really care about, the things that really motivate us – and then go for it! We have to take full responsibility for our lives and make things happen for ourselves.

A new mantra for you: Decide –> Commit –> Do

I’m here to help. If you want to learn the secret formula to getting and staying motivated check out my “Instant Motivation” Program now.
